Research Question

How has the violence against women and girls in Iran violated human rights?

What does discrimination against women and girls in Iran effect gender equality?

How does the violence against women in Iran compare to other extremes within the culture?

I will have to look at specific cases where violence against women is being used within the country. I will also have to learn about what laws if any are in place to fix the issues and what women are doing about it. If they are able what is being done. I think that I will also need to look at what other nations are doing about the issue helping to improve it.

Research Proposal

I am interested in looking at women rights. Specifically I think I want to look at how women are being held back in their communities by things that they can't control like having their menstrual cycles. With this I want to look at the work that Elizabeth Scharpf did in Mozambique and developing inexpensive sanitary products. 


I also want to look more into other womens health issues in this country.

Possibly off of this I would want to do a different topic pertaining to womens health in the middle East or Africa. I know its a current issue and I'm really interested in know more about it.


I also want to look at women and education and in what ways they are being held back or discriminated against. I know that in some countries young girls are not able to go to school because they have to take on the duties of the home.

This article talked about crimes against humanity. The articles focused on the report that the United Nations released that documented these crimes and focused also on how these events are affecting women and children. They want to find ways in which to deal with the laws that are being violated "to deal with the legacy of these violations, including truth, justice, reparation and reform." From the article I think that the steps that are being taken to solve these problems are good. I think that by making the violence against these women publicized it will help the country in the future so that the young generation will not be one filled with violence. Ileka Atoko ambassador to the United Nations found the report appalling but that these events were not new. He alone with the Congonese government believe that justice must be taken.

This article talked about a Invisible war that is tearing apart the society. Its talking about the war of rape and destruction against women. I found this really sad because these women and children are no longer safe in their own homes being that there own husbands are the ones who are committing these acts. But what makes these more extreme is that the rapist are violating their victims with the guns and other tools making these brutalities even more shocking. These women have been public traumatized and mutilated and his had drastic physical and mental consequences.

Small Groupd Discussion Review

1.An idea that is still lingering after my discussion is how the Europeans were able to live with the way they were treating the Africans. I know it was talked about in the chapter but it is still something that I am continuing to think about

2. Evaluate your final group discussion.
I think the discussion started out well but the more we looked into the questions it got harder because a lot of the questions were repetitive. I liked working in the smaller group because we were able to build off of more of the ideas. I also liked how everyone was able to feel comfortable talking and giving their ideas and opinions.

King Leopolds Ghost Response to Reading pg. 1-31.

While reading I found myself very interested in the section about Affonso and his time while on the throne in Africa. What I liked in the reading about him was how it talked about him trying to end the slave trade. Something that I also thought was interesting was the Europeans vision Africa as whole before they began to have their own explorations there and it was all based on what other people has said. Ranulf Higden has done a map of the world and has said that Africa contained one eyed people who used their feet to protect their heads. The Europeans based their first impressions off of misconceptions. After Higden when other geographers explored that area more misconceptions came about. Europeans had no reason not to believe them so instead of looking for themselves they just trusted these geographers. But then in the fifteenth century when Europeans began leading their own explorations did they start to see that the country had many things for them to gain to help the Industrial Revolution.

I also like reading about Henry Morton Stanley. What I enjoyed most about reading about him was how his name changed many times before he settled on Henry Morton Stanley. He took on many identities based on were he was in his life and I liked how the book talked a lot about his travels and his explorations in Africa and in North America.

1. Since there was not written language in the Congo when the Europeans arrive how were the events that happened recorded if they were by the people in Africa?

2. Who were some of the other people like Edmund Dene Morel besides George Washington Williams who tried to get the attention of the rest of the world about King Leopold's Congo and what actions were they taking?

End of class thoughts

1. What did you learn?
I learned a lot about colonization and what it actually is. Before I new a little about it but not a lot. I also liked talking about new and old imperialism.

3. Something you're curious about investigating further.
I'm curious about learning more about different African countries and their history because after class today and after reading my summer reading book I just want to know more about the country as a whole. I also am interested in learning more about old imperialism.

Current Events Reporting

1. What's being discussed in this article?
The article starts out by talking about Yang Zhizhu who was fired from his job because he had more than one child. In Beijing it is not uncommon for this to happen because the country tries to control the population and have often time suggested to couples to only have one child. It goes on to talk about how within the country people have started to become more and more discontent on the policy.Within in the country they have a lower birthrate than other countries and also the boy to girl ratio is off because of the lower birthrates. The government there has recently started to apply consequences to those who do decide to have more children.

2. When did the event happen? (Is this breaking news or something that's been analyzed and discussed for a while?)
This is not breaking news because policies like this have been apart of the culture in Bejing but within the last 30 years officials have been telling parents to settle for one child and use various other methods to end other pregnancies. But what is breaking news is the affects that this has had on their society.

3.What questions do you have that would help make this article make more sense to you? What more do you need to learn about to be able to report on this event?
I would want to know what made the country feel that this was an issue. I would also want to know why they would encourage parents to end the pregnancy if it was not their first child. I would also want to know if the policy applies differently to those who had trouble getting pregnant. I would also want to know more about what the birth rate was before they made these changes.

Which news worthy events do you remember from your lifetime?

1.- When the war started I was in 4th grade and we were on our way to Vacation in the Bahamas with my family. Hurricane Katrina. I remember this because my family had been watching the coverage a lot to see what was going on. I also had lots of family who lived in the area and we were keeping in contact with them., When the ipod came out. I remember this because my brother was really into computer stuff and he had been waiting for it to come out and I remember him trying to explain it to me and I just didn't get what was so great about it.
